Women Who Move Orlando Forward: Women in Sports

March is all about celebrating the women who shape our communities, challenge expectations, and create lasting impact and the Women in Sports event hosted by the Orange County Regional History Center did exactly that.

From sports and storytelling to film and poetry, the event highlighted the many ways women influence culture both on and off the field. Guests heard from inspiring voices including Mimi Chen, whose work helped shape Disney’s Mulan, members of the championship-winning Orlando Pride, and Camara Gaither, whose powerful spoken words grounded the evening in reflection and community.

The event was a reminder that women in sports aren’t just athletes, they are leaders, creatives, storytellers, and changemakers helping define Orlando’s cultural landscape.

As we celebrated women in sports, we were reminded how important it is to recognize and uplift women athletes everywhere, especially in moments when recognition falls short, like the recent conversation surrounding the United States women's national ice hockey team. That’s why we’re especially proud here in Orlando to celebrate our own champions, the Orlando Pride, who made history in 2024 with a remarkable double-title season in the National Women's Soccer League, a milestone not just for women’s sports, but for our entire city.

We are proud to honor the athletes of the Orlando Pride, whose talent, determination, and leadership on and off the field inspire our community and show young girls across Orlando what’s possible when passion meets opportunity.

Orange County Regional History Center lead a beautiful event. Their dedication to preserving and sharing our region’s history ensures that the stories of those who shaped our city, especially the women we honored, are remembered, celebrated, and passed on to future generations.
